It's What I Do

As a boy I fished along these banks when I should have been in class
Sat beneath the redwoods here just to watch the river pass
Heaven knows I miss those days they’re gone for good it’s true
And this place will never be the same because of what I do
It’s what I do
The trees that used to shade these banks don’t stand here any more
Me and Bobby laid them low in the Spring of eighty four
Working late with summer’s heat knocking at the door
And now when boys play hooky they don’t fish here any more
It’s what I do
It’s what I do it’s all I know it’s what I’ve always done
Like my dad before and his dad too I don’t think twice it’s what I do
Over here’s the ridge where Bobby paid the price so dear
For getting lazy setting choke and refusing to stand clear
These days Bobby views the world while riding in a chair
And I’m back in the forest, hell it could have happened anywhere
It’s what I do
It’s what I do it’s all I know it’s what I’ve always done
Like my dad before and his dad too I don’t ask why it’s what I do
Now some folks say I’ve raped the land and some folks may be right
But as I look upon my boy sleeping in the night
I’ve worked to fill his belly built this shack to keep us warm
Who could look upon him and say what I do is wrong it’s what I do
It’s what I do it’s all I know it’s what I’ve always done
Like my dad before and his dad too I don’t think twice it’s what I do
I don’t ask why it’s what I do
